I was twelve years old and my parents’ marriage was in meltdown.
Like most / all young people in this situation, I felt scared and confused.
Were my parents going to split up?
What would happen to our family if they did?
Then I read It’s Not the End of the World by Judy Blume.
Instantly I felt reassured. By reading about a character going through similar pain and confusion I no longer felt so alone. I felt comforted and understood.
So many books inspired and reassured me when I was younger – it’s why I ended up writing the young adult books that I do – because I in turn, want to inspire young adults to believe in themselves and dare to dream of a brighter future.
Read to Dream is my way of taking this further … of getting my books to the young adults who need them the most.
Every time somebody hires me as their writing coach or copywriter 10% of their fee goes straight to Read to Dream and I send the equivalent value in signed books to a library / school / young people’s organisation of their choice (or to a school / library / organisation in a deprived area).
The books featured in the Read to Dream scheme are:
The Moonlight Dreamers (Walker Books) – a story of daring to dream and finding your place in the world.
True Face (Faber & Faber) – a non-fiction guide to living authentically and courageously
Finding Cherokee Brown (Egmont) – the story of a girl finding the courage to stand up to her bullies
Dear Dylan (Egmont) – the story of a girl who finds the courage to pursue her acting dream in the face of conflict and abuse at home
If you know of a school / library / young people’s organisation that could benefit from some free inspirational books please let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
As the Read to Dream scheme takes off I’ll also be using the money from it to cover my travel expenses to give FREE Dare to Dream talks at schools / organisations in deprived areas.
Again, if you know of anyone you think I should put on the list of places to contact please do let me know.
Here’s to changing the world with words!
